In 1950, American Fruit Grower - in conjunction with the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) - established the Joseph Harvey Gourley Award to honor the author or authors of the best paper on pomology printed in the Proceedings of the ASHS. An outstanding figure in U.S horticulture, Dr. Gourley was chairman of the departments of horticulture at The Ohio State University and Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station from 1921 to 1946. He also served as president of ASHS in 1923 and associate editor of American Fruit Grower from 1935 until he passed away in 1946.
The J.H. Gourley Award was presented to some 76 researchers over the course of 34 years. It consisted of an engraved silver medal and $100 cash. The medal, designed by the famous artist Dupuis and cast in the Paris mint, was mounted on a marble base along with a pen set. Its reverse side featured a bas relief design depicting fertility and growth.
