Midwest Apple Improvement Association
Seeking The Perfect Apple
The Midwest Apple Improvement Association is driven by its mission of developing the most ideal apple varieties.
Attending a fruit association meeting often involves sitting in on several educational sessions, visiting a trade show, attending a banquet, or other activities.
The Midwest Apple Improvement Association (MAIA) works a little differently. Its annual meeting took place at Dawes Arboretum, not far from Columbus, OH, in mid November. In a small meeting room, about 30 attendees met to share their experiences in apple breeding, whether they were in grower-owned apple orchards or university labs and trial fields.
It's hard to call the MAIA an "association" - it is more like a club of growers, researchers, and apple lovers who share the same goal: creating ideal disease- and frost-resistant apple varieties that both growers and consumers can enjoy. This is done through years of variety evaluation for potential parents, seedling trial and error, and analysis as the fruit matures.
